In October 2019 I applied to be a Volunteer Photographer within the West Midlands Fire Service. I saw a post on twitter where one of the volunteers had attended a large-scale incident in Birmingham and I was looking for excuses at the time to go and use my new DSLR camera.
A few days later I received an email back inviting me to an interview at the headquaters with the head of communications and the Brigade Photographer. All went well and they liked example photos that I had shown them.
A week or two after that I received a phone call inviting me back to HQ rto pick up my ID and PPE, which needed to be work to all incidents. I was also given a login to their online training platform, where I would learn the safety procedures etc which are required for me to attend stations, training sessions and be on the fireground at incidents.
